Volunteering at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council

N. Legair

I volunteered to work at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council on November 15 and November 17. The event was held at the Four Seasons Hotel on 2800 Pennsylvania Avenue. Chris Wayne and Associates (CWA) is the event and communications firm who worked with The Wall Street Journal to organize the event. Because I had volunteered with CWA in the past, they emailed me a link register to volunteer for the CEO Council.

On November 15, I worked from 12:30 PM to 8:00 PM. That day was just a setup day, and the dress code was business casual. My work that day consisted of assembling gift bags for event participants, preparing name tents for participants, and alphabetizing name badges for participants. The CWA staff took their role as event organizers very seriously and had strict, specific instructions for how the gift bags were to be prepared. “They don’t play!” one of the CWA interns exclaimed as another intern explained to the volunteers that, within each gift bag, magazines were supposed to face forward, the bookmark within the complimentary book was supposed stick out just enough so that the WSJ logo was visible, the liquor gift box was supposed to be placed so that the words on the box went downward, etc.

The CEO Council officially took place on November 16 and November 17. The dress code for those days was business formal. On November 17, I worked from 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM. I worked as a mic runner and helped with breakdown at the end of the event. While working as a mic runner, I got to watch a portion of the program.

Though it is easy to recall the events of the day with humor, the attention to detail of the CWA staff is partially what attracted me to volunteering with the firm. The entire volunteer experience was quite insightful.
