I stay in contact with the organization I interned for my
sophomore year of college and they were hosting an event for the members of
their organization. I volunteered to work at the event, which was held at The
Graham Hotel in Georgetown. For part of
the night, I was positioned at the check-in desk to greet the members of the
organization. Since majority of the
members do not reside in the DC area, they were staying in the hotel. So, as they checked in and I greeted them, I
got to witness first hand what it’s like behind the check-in desk and
everything that The Graham employees do to welcome and greet the guest to great
that “experience”. From the reservation
system, to witnessing firsthand the guests needs and wants (even the
problems/conflicts that would arise), and how the employees make it their top
priority to fulfill them, I saw the dedication it takes to work within the
hospitality industry. The people behind
the front desk amazed me by how calm they remained while dealing with disgruntled
guest. I obviously realized that the
hospitality industry really isn’t for everyone- you really do have to be
passionate about it in order to succeed.
My tasks throughout the rest of the night turned out to be very similar to
those actually working at the Graham since I was serving the guests when they
needed something at the event or brought to their room.
