On October 25th, I volunteered at MetroCooking DC
held at the Washington Convention Center. The show exhibited both commercial
and private vendors, as well as a Grande Tasting Pavilion that featured samples
from approximately 50 local restaurants. Sunday’s show also celebrated the 2015
James Beard awarded chefs, all of whom gave cooking demonstrations. In
addition, the celebrity guest for Sunday’s show was famed chef Michael Symon,
who has appeared on both the Food Network’s Iron
Chef and ABD’s The Chew. Chef
Symon gave several cooking demonstrations as well as book signings and
interviews.
My volunteer position entailed
checking in the media and press who had come to cover the show. Sunday was the
second day of the MetroCooking show, and I worked the afternoon shift, which
was relatively quiet. Therefore, I had plenty of time to experience the show
and left extremely full of free samples. Based on my experience working at the
show, I can honestly say that MetroCooking was extremely well run, and the
transitions between each cooking demonstration went smoothly. The staff at the
Convention Center was also incredibly friendly, and I would have never been
able to find the correct exhibit hall without their help.
Being able to walk around and experience
the MetroCooking show also gave me insight from an attendee’s point of view. I
definitely had a positive experience as an attendee as the show was easy to
navigate, there were a large variety of vendors, and one could easily find a
seat at the cooking demonstrations. The only negative I experienced as an
attendee was that the line to enter the Grand Tasting Pavilion was extremely
long due to understaffing. Overall though I had a wonderful experience and definitely
hope to attend MetroCooking DC again next year!
