One of my favorite
volunteer experiences this semester came when I was unable to travel with the
water polo team. The team was leaving Wednesday so Thursday after my class I
took a red eye to California to meet up with them. What they did not know was
that I had coordinated with one of the parents who lives out there to set up a
dinner banquet and I had invited all of their parents. While not all the
parents could come many were able to show up and were appreciative to be able
to see their kids. The parents got to meet each other and see who their kids
would be with for roughly the next four years of their lives. The food that the
parent found was amazing and the social experience that the teammates got by
meeting their friends’ parents made it so they bonded and felt more like a
family.
