On November 17th,
I attended a networking event hosted by the GW
Sports Business Association at the Verizon Center. It was an interesting
event, quite different from most as it was hosted inside the Verizon Center,
the home of the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals.
The event started with a tour
of the facilities, such as various ticketing stands and gift shops. We then
proceeded to head to courtside, where players were warming up. Whilst watching
the players stretch and shoot hoops, several important figures came to see us.
Monumental Sports had several of their executives explain their roles and
responsibilities. Among others, the head of sales, head of ticketing and head
of operations for the DC area are the ones who stood out in my mind. I’ve always
been interested in these fields, and being able to attend a game in their
presence was a wonderful and enlightening experience.
The major takeaways I got
from this networking event were as follow. Firstly, the importance of
networking not only during the job application process but also throughout
one’s tenure at university. Secondly, several members stressed the importance
of exploring new horizons and being open to new ideas and experience. Matt, the
head of sales, mentioned that he got his job simply being at the right place at
the right time. While he did get lucky in his application, he mentioned that
his tenacity in applying for multiple sectors is what aided him. Finally, the
director of operations mentioned that it is important to be passionate in what
one does as a career. Performance is often linked to motivation, making it hard
to apply oneself to a job he does not enjoy.
