My Top Three Takeaways

Informational Interview

When I first learned that I had to set up an interview with a professional in the hospitality industry, I felt nervous. However, setting up an informational interview, and getting to know Peter DiOrio and his thoughts about the hotel industry has been a rewarding and informative experience for me. Before the interview, I didn't know if the lodging industry was the right fit for me; however, this interview reinforced my desire to pursue a managerial position within the hospitality industry. Moreover, as I mentioned in class last week, today I had the opportunity to have my second interview. This morning I met with Erica Holmes, Washington Hilton's Assistant Director, at a Starbucks in DuPont Circle. We spoke for 35 minutes. Her advice and insight of  the hospitality industry was invaluable. I can't wait to have my next interviewee!

Your Personal Brand

At the beginning of this semester, I had the opportunity to volunteer at MEET National, a conference that offers a fresh vision for meeting and event professionals. In one of the presentations I attended, the presenter, Michael Lyons, talked about the main elements of a personal brand. These included: personal appearance, personality, competencies and differentiation. Weeks after, we discussed this topic more in depth in class. I realized that our personal brand is the vivid image of what we have to offer. By following these elements, one can stand out from the competition and increase one's likelihood of landing an interview. As college students, we are eager to attain the "dream internship/job." Having a personal brand will give us a cutting-edge advantage over others. Let's tap into it before it becomes too mainstream.

Leadership vs Management

Are you a leader? Are you a manager? In class ,we learned that leadership and management aren't synonymous; however, I believe that both are linked and complementary. As future managers and leaders, we will be working in an environment where work is accomplished with and through others in an efficient and effective way. I'm aiming to become both. I want to have the opportunity to get my team on board and get them to follow my vision of success. Who do you want to be?
