On Thanksgiving Day, my cousin and I had dinner at the
popular Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House on 950 I Street. We decided on
Del Frisco’s because my roommate had recommended it earlier. Also, my cousin
had heard buzz about it (its New York location) in the past.
We arrived around 4:00 PM. We were greeted by a smiling
staff member and were seated immediately after stating our reservation. The
food was pricey (as expected) but delicious. I shared a crab cake starter with
my cousin, ordered a ribeye steak with bone, ordered a baked potato side, and
had ice cream for dessert. I originally ordered an alcoholic ice cream drink
not realizing that the “liqueur” listed in its ingredients was indeed
alcoholic. Because I do not consume alcohol, I apologized to our server and
asked for plain ice cream. The server told me not to apologize and got my ice
cream right away. She was incredibly pleasant.
In fact, all of the staff with whom I interacted that
afternoon impressed me positively. The most unpleasant part of the experience actually
had nothing to do with the restaurant itself. A patron sitting at a table
across from my cousin and I called out to us and asked us what steaks we had
ordered. My cousin politely and succinctly answered. Afterward I heard the
patron tell his companions that “we have a great government where all kinds of
people can eat at good restaurants.” I suppose the comment might have been
innocuous, but it was not really something I cared to hear.
Overall, the experience met my expectations. I would return
to the restaurant on a special occasion. To avoid the minor unpleasantness that
I experienced during my last visit, I will ask to be seated away from anyone
whom I determine fits the profile of that patron.
