For my first post I will be discussing my work with the DC Metropolitan
Club. My most interesting experience there was during my last week I was under
the supervision of the sommelier of the club and he had me participate in a
wine tasting for what the club was going to order. He taught me how to tell
where the wine was from based on the color, thickness, and acidity of the wine.
While all of this was fun the key take away was when he explained how this
purchase would tie into the sales and profits of the club. While the wines we
were tasting would not be ready for sale when they arrived he explained how the
club purchased them based on previous experience with the winery and let the
wines age in the cellar before offering them to the members. This was a tricky
way to do business as certain wines do not age as well as others and the price
of the bottles they bought today could change drastically for better or worse.
This was very useful information as to how being knowledgeable of the beverages
play such a key role in the companies’ profits. This was not only a blast to do
but a great learning experience.
